Seychellois student to gain pre-YOG experience

PRIOR to the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will be held in Singapore, students from all over the world will have the chance to experience and embrace the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

Gary Elisabeth and Sam Rignace accept the plane tickets from Socga’s vice-president Mr Adam

This will be during the Friends@YOG twinning programme, which will take place next month.
An initiative of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYGOC), the programme will also help the students better understand the diverse cultures of the world and forge international friendships.

Seychelles will be represented at the event by Gary Elisabeth of Pointe Larue secondary school.
He received his plane ticket from Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) vice-president Hugh Adam during a presentation last Monday at the association’s office at Roche Caďman.

Present were Socga’s executive committee members, Gary’s parents and his headteacher Sheila Pool.
Gary has been chosen after he met the criteria set by the SYGOC. These included a good academic background and a strong interest in journalism.

During the Friends@YOG programme, schools in Singapore will be twinned with students from 204 International Olympic committee (IOC) member countries.

The fun and exciting learning journey will allow students to cultivate a global mindset by forging international friendships, learning about other countries’ cultures and developing respect for cultural diversity.

It will also build international friendship through collaboration and cultural exchanges and cultivate among youths a global outlook, a passion for sports and good habits that are part of a healthy lifestyle.

Gary will leave the country on Friday October 9 and is expected back on Wednesday October 28.

Also at Monday’s presentation, Sam Rignace of the Seychelles Cycling Association (SCA) accepted a plane ticket from Mr Adam on behalf of cyclist Francis Louis, who will be attending a one-month training camp in South Africa.
