| New step to boost fight against piracy - 04.11.2009
The next stage in the fight against piracy will be to set up a proper prosecution sequence that will allow suspected pirates to be put on trial in the relevant countries and sent to prison if found guilty.
This process was discussed yesterday at State House by Vice-President Joseph Belmont and Captain David Dutton, commander of HMS Cumberland, which is taking part in the European Union’s Atalanta mission against piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
Capt Dutton was accompanied by British high commissioner to Seychelles Matthew Forbes and officers from the ship. They also discussed the coalition work between the various forces now taking part in the fight against piracy and how information can be shared more efficiently.
Once the exact location of the pirates has been identified, action to stop them can be taken much more quickly, they agreed. The Cumberland is here to take on provisions, refuel and allow its crew to rest after spending five months at sea. It left Britain in May and is expected back in December. |
