Bodybuilding: Flex posers to dazzle crowd in Mr Regatta contest |27 September 2013
Local flex posers will step onto the stage at the Tequila Boom night club tonight to dazzle the crowd in the Mr Regatta 2013 contest.
Sponsored by the Seychelles Round Table, tonight’s contest is the first organised this year and according to the organisers 10 bodybuilders will perform their routine.
The bodybuilding contest is part of the activities organised by the Seychelles Round Table during the annual Regatta event.
Mike Etienne of the organising committee told Sports Nation in a telephone conversation yesterday that they are happy with the number of flex posers who have registered for the event.
“Normally, we get around 10 bodybuilders for the Mr Regatta contest which is good. But there were talks that some young flex posers would compete and in the end they did not. It’s too early to know why they have decided not to compete, but we will make an investigation,” said Mr Etienne.
He added that of the 10 flex posers, two are foreigners – Czech Peter and South African Max.
Both of them will be making their debut on stage and have thanked the organisers for giving them the opportunity to flex their muscles on stage.
“This is an open competition and everyone is allowed to take part. It’s good that we get foreigners to compete with Seychellois in a colourful event like the Mr Regatta contest,” added Mr Etienne.
All flex posers will receive certificates, and the top finishers will get trophies and cash prizes sponsored by the Seychelles Round Table.
A special prize will be given out to a bodybuilder who has made a special contribution to the sport and Mr Etienne said that this flex poser will be competing tonight.
Ziad Al Adou Mekdachi is the defending Mr Regatta in the senior category, while Ricky Larue was invincible in the junior division last year.
Mekdachi made it back-to-back win after winning the title for the first time in 2010. The Mr Regatta contest was not organised in 2011.
Seychelles’ bodybuilding is now being run by a caretaker committee chaired by Tedd Sauzier. Barnsley Antat is the secretary and Justin Ernest the treasurer. The members are Golbert Nicette, Franky Cedras, Mike Etienne and National Sports Council representative Robert Auguste.
The caretaker committee’s mandate is to organise competitions and prepare for elections which should take place by February 1, 2014 the latest.
Before the setting up of the caretaker committee earlier this year, bodybuilding had been bleeding over the last two years following the break-up in early 2010 of the former Seychelles Amateur Bodybuilding Association (Sabba) into the Seychelles Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) affiliated to the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB), and the Seychelles Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (SBPF) which is a member of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPSF) – a break-away organisation from the IFBB.
