Death of Pope John Paul II-Bishop Chang-Him offers thanks, prayers and condolences |05 April 2005
Bishop French’s message reads:
“I was pleased of the opportunity and privilege of meeting the late Pope John Paul during his visit to Seychelles in 1986. All the honours and affirmations that have been voiced in respect of his life and pontifical ministry have been authentic attributes.
Now that he is at rest, I believe that his patient and enduring acceptance of suffering, following the example of His Lord and Master, will stand out among the visible peaks in relation to the degree in which the Almighty will have been glorified in him and his high calling. As a multi-lingual orator and preacher, to have lost even the power of speech to bless, but yet finding strength to move to the window of his residence to see and be seen, but then to be able only to trace the sign of the cross in blessing, spoke louder and touched more hearts locally and globally than all the words he had pronounced before. It was a powerful demonstration of love and care for the people he served and humanity, a visible identification with all who were suffering, felt powerless, were inarticulate, and needed strength to continue till the very end.
“We give thanks for the life and witness of Pope John Paul. Our deepest condolences to Bishop Denis Wiehe, his clergy, religious congregations, the faithful of his Diocese and all who mourn the passing of Pope John Paul. Our prayers for those who have the responsibility of preparing for his funeral and Requiem Masses. Divine guidance to those who have the onerous responsibility of identifying his successor, already chosen by the Lord.
“May he rest in peace”.
