Women's football-Olympia Coast clinch fourth Patron's Cup title in five years

BIBI ... Olympia Coast's match winner

Saturday's (April 2) triumph brings to four the number of Patron's Cup title won by Port Glaud-based Olympia Coast in five years.

The three other times they lifted the first piece of silverware of the season were in 2001, 2002, and 2003. In 2004, they lost the titles to Dolphins who had achieved a League and Cup double in 2003.

Diguois Natacha Bibi, a former athlete, was Olympia Coast's hero on Saturday, netting the game's only goal in the 33rd minute.

It is worth noting that in the 2003 edition of the Cup match, Bibi, who still holds a number of national records, got her name on the scoresheet five times, a feat no other local female footballer has achieved. Olympia Coast drubbed United Sisters 7-1 in that match.

Olympia Coast's trainer Gerard Gamatis told Sports Nation  that he was expecting a tough and difficult match against Ste Anne United.

"It was a difficult match as our opponents gave us a good run for our money. I am happy that we have recaptured our crown though. Had our strikers converted each of the scoring opportunities, especially in the first period, we could have won the match by a wider margin," said Gamatis, adding that their aim this season is to make a clean sweep of all the titles on offer.

It is to note that the Patron's Cup is played between the League and Land Marine Cup winners of the previous season.
