Saadik Alibhaye, Velma Joubert and Elcia Pillay were considered for the City & Guilds medal for excellence programme awarded to international students after having done very well in their respective courses in the 2002 and 2003 series of exams.

Saadik had completed the Technician Certificate in Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Velma did certificate in Book-Keeping Accounts Level 2 and Elcia completed her Diploma in Reception Operations and Services.

It is to be noted that this is the second time Elcia is awarded this medal, after winning it at certificate level a few years ago.

The three recipients received their medals from Education and Youth minister Danny Faure in the presence of their parents in a brief ceremony held at the minister's conference room on Friday.

The City & Guilds courses are offered in Technical Studies and Business Programme area of the Seychelles Polytechnic and in the Hospitality programme of the Seychelles
Hospitality and Tourism College (SHTTC).

The director general of Technical and Further Education, Anne Lafortune, said this was a remarkable achievement as the three Seychellois recipients were chosen among thousands of other candidates worldwide, which explains why it has taken the university a bit of time to release the names of the winners.

The awards, she said, also showed that if students applied themselves fully to their studies they will excel and stand out on the international stage with the rest of the world.

This is the third time candidates from Seychelles are awarded the City & Guilds gold medals.
