Petanque: Triplette League Finals-Mont Buxton overall winners of league finals |07 June 2006
The men’s team comprising Roland Renaud, Joseph Sinon, Gianni Ceccato and Ivan Anacoura
literally crushed all their opponents to finish first, while Linda Sinon, Virna Fanny
and Marie-May Savy were the winners of women’s final. Chang-Time brothers Fabien and
Nicolas, also from Mt Buxton, won the junior category.
The triplette league final competition saw the participation of 16 teams - eight men’s,
three women’s and five juniors’. All participating teams – Mt Buxton, Takamaka, Tryers,
La Digue, Roche Caïman, Bel Ombre - were allowed to enter two teams in each category but
only Mt Buxton were able to fill the quota.
The triplette finals were to be disputed between the league winners from La Digue and
Mahe but to make the competition more interesting, the organisers chose to involve the
other teams.
Their decision proved to be right as the two teams from La Digue gave a dismal display.
They both endured heavylosses in their matches against Mahe opponents and their best
trio of Goldy Asba, Armstrong Jean and Logan Ernesta could only manage three closely
fought victories to finish fifth overall.
Mt Buxton were the eventual winners with six victories from seven games. Their only loss
was against the other Mont Buxton team made up of Bernard and Benny Chang Time, Antonio
Gopal and Julien Ernest, in the closing match.
Renaud, Sinon, Ceccato and Anacoura defeated Leslie and Desiré Low-Toy and Bernard Denis
of league champions Takamaka 11-9 in their second match to avenge their league loss
which saw them hand the league title to the South Mahe team on the final day of the
league competition a fortnight ago.
Takamaka, clearly taken aback from the defeat, went on to lose against Tryers, the La
Digue trio of Asba, Jean and Ernesta and to the second team from Mont Buxton. They had
to settle for sixth position.
The two Chang-Time, Gopal and Ernest finished as runners-up with five victories. Third
place went to Joseph Charles, Joelif César, Auguste Louise and Vincent Luther of Tryers
who managed four victories in seven matches.
Collin Esparon, Ranga Chetty and Brendon Melon from Takamaka were the surprise package
as they managed four victories to earn fourth place. It must be noted that they finished
last in the league competition.
In the women’s tournament there was revenge for Linda Sinon, Virna Fanny and Marie-May
Savy who defeated their counterparts Sheila Chang-Time, Lyvia Sinon and Rachel Mangroo
13-9 to finish as champions.
The latter had been crowned league champions two weeks ago but finished third in the
final after failing to win a single match.
Roche Caïman, made up of Vivian Finesse, Xianne Joubert and Sheila Adolphe, were second
after they also managed to surprise the league champions with a 13-10 win.
There was no surprise in the junior event. Fabien and Nicolas Chang-Time again combined
to win the doublette competition. They finished with the perfect score of four victories
from four matches.
Second place went to Marcus and Mario Emilien from Bel Ombre, Sheena Mangroo and Marius
Sinon from Mt Buxton were third, Joshua Adeline and Julius Simeon came out fourth while
James and Jude Ernesta finished fifth.
