Independence Day anniversary greetings from Leader of Opposition |30 June 2006
“I hope that the occasion will be celebrated in peace, unity and joy,” says Mr Ramkalawan in his message for the occasion.
“Independence remains the most significant event in the history of our country since it marks the birth of our nation. On June 29, 1976, we joined the world family of independent states and although we are small, as a sovereign nation we stand equal to all. Today, we must aspire to be a worthy equal in the eyes of the whole world,” says Mr Ramkalawan in his message.
“This day should remain as the symbol of our identity. We have always been proud to be Seychellois, but we can be proud only as long as we are firm in maintaining our principles and remain dedicated to working for the best interests of our country,” the message reads.
“We became independent as a democratic nation, with the solemn duty to respect and uphold the rights of all our citizens and to guarantee equality of opportunity for all. Today, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Independence, this remains a solemn undertaking. I hope that everyone of us will feel inspired to strengthen our determination to work for the good of our country so that we may realize the dream of being a peaceful, just and prosperous society,” the message adds.
“I hope that all Seychellois and descendants of Seychellois in every part of the world will join with those of us here in marking this special occasion,” the message ends.
