Exploring Islam

Guests and members of the general public enhancing their knowledge of the Islamic faith through the exhibition

The event was an initiative of the Islamic Society of Seychelles (ISOS), in collaboration with the Centre for Information and Guidance.

The highlight of the day was an exhibition entitled “Explore Islam”, the aim of which was to educate the general public on Islam as well as dissociate the religion from negative stereotypes that Islam has been associated with around the world particularly the misconception that it is behind terrorism.

This was addressed through books, charts, pictures, audio CDs and even video shows.

A ‘Women and Kids’ corner addressed issues such as women’s rights and freedom, polygamy and birth control. Clarifications and explanations were given on some of the pressing subjects affecting women such as the right of inheritance, right for women to work and realize their own dreams and ambitions.

The issue of drug and alcohol abuse was highlighted in the ‘Social Evils’ corner, with charts displaying statistics and general information on the use of these substances and accounts relating how these substances affect the human body and influence behaviour.

Other sections of the exhibition focused on General Islam, Islamic History, and the Qura'n and its Miracle.

Attended by government officials, religious leaders from other faiths, among other guests, the exhibition was officially opened by the secretary to the Cabinet, Mohamed Afif.


It is believe that the first Islam faithfuls arrived in Seychelles in the nineteenth century.

At present there are approximately 8000 practicing Islam in Seychelles, and most of them hold the view that for a long time, their faith has been portrayed in a negative light and have been associated with terrorism in many parts of the world. In fact most Islam followers see their religion as one which promotes social order.
