Chess: National Championship and Under-12 tournament-Benjamin Hoareau and Dericka Figaro winners |14 November 2006
After winning the Under-14 championship last month, reigning female chessler of the year Figaro, 12, accumulated six points in the double-round round-robin tournament. She also took home the Under-12 trophy.
Girra Pierre of Belonie Secondary School and Marianna Eulentin of Anse Royale Primary School finished joint-second with three points apiece. Pierre’s two losses were against eventual champion Figaro.
Six-year-old Jessy Eulentin failed to score a point but played well, according to the organisers.
In the men’s competition, Hoareau took first place with seven points in the competition contested by 11 chesslers and played on the Swiss system, meaning that players had 15 minutes to finish their games.
Independent School’s Andrew Accouche avenged his recent loss to rival Alfred Figaro with a surprised checkmate to finish second with six points. Figaro settled for third position with five points.
Newcomer Rick Confiance played well to take fourth place overall with 4.5 points and the 12-year-old took home the Under-12 trophy.
Jean-Phillip Eulentin and nine-year-old Damien Hoareau finished joint-fifth overall with four points. Damienne Hoareau thus finished as runner-up to Confiance in the Under-12 division.
The remaining positions were held by Aubrey Barreau (seventh overall with 3.5 points and third in the Under-12 division), Rendolf Hoareau (eighth overall with 3 points), Guillaume Sinon (ninth overall with 2.5 points and fourth in the Under-12 division), Arnold Mein (10th overall with 1.5 points and fifth in the Under-12 division) and Sean Raguin (11th overall with 1 point and sixth in the Under-12 division).
