African Senior Badminton Championship-Another bronze for Seychelles |11 December 2006
African singles champion in 2002 in Morocco, Juliette Ah-Wan were involved in all three finals against South African opponents. She was to play the ladies’ singles final, the ladies’ doubles final with Catherina Paulin as partner and the mixed doubles final alongside Georgie Cupidon.
Before yesterday’s finals, Seychelles had already won two bronze medals at the championship.
The first was won in the team event after losing 2-3 to host country Algeria in the semifinal.
It is to note that Seychelles topped the six-team pool B with five victories in as many games – winning against Uganda (4-1), Zambia (4-1), Ghana (4-1), Morocco (4-1) and finally Mauritius (5-0) to decide the pool winners. Seychelles won just two matches out of five against pool A runners-up Algeria in the semifinal inside the OMS d’El Biar Gymnasium.
Winners on a 3-2 score against Mauritius in the semifinal, South Africa claimed the gold medal for a third time in a row in the biennial competition by beating Algeria 3-0 in the final.
In the individual competition, the pair of Cupidon and Steve Malcouzane fell to a South African pair in the semifinal of the men’s doubles to win the bronze medal.
