National Assembly Election-No political campaigning during cooling-off period |08 May 2007

Campaigning is also not allowed during the election period from May 10 to 12.
“Electioneering for the purpose of the forthcoming National Assembly Election 2007 ended at midnight on Sunday May 6, 2007.

“Monday, May 7; Tuesday, May 8; and Wednesday, May 9 are ‘cooling-off’ period.
“No electioneering in respect of the National Assembly General Election 2007 should take place during that period, pursuant to Section 50(1) of the Election Act,” a communique from the Electoral Commissioner’s Office said yesterday.

During the cooling-off period it is against the Electoral Law to distribute or display publicly political campaigning materials as well as publish or broadcast any electoral material.

“Any person engaged in electioneering during the ‘cooling-off’ period commits an offence and is liable to a fine of SR20,000 and imprisonment for 3 years,” the communiqué said.
