Ile Perseverance Development Project-Social agencies give their input

It is expected that at least 10,000 people will be residing in two districts on the island by the year 2010 once the Ile Perseverance housing project, which is to comprise 5,000 units, is completed.

Considering the large number of inhabitants who are to reside on the island before long, and the fair amount of communal services they will require, the Ministry of Land Use & Habitat (MLUH), which is in charge of designing the concept plan for the island, has called on its social partners to give consent to the plan and to seek finance for the construction of structures through which they will provide basic social services to the people of the island.

Stakeholders listening to the presentation on TuesdayThe partners being targeted are the Department of Community Development, the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Public Utilities Company, the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation, the Police and Fire Department, plus providers of other essential services.
One of the aims of putting up such services on the island is to minimize traffic movement  from the island for the purpose of getting access to these services on the mainland.
Speaking during a presentation to introduce the concept plan of the island to the social partners, MLUH’s principal architect on the Ile Perseverance Development Project, Zoran Vuksanovic, said that it would be an inconvenience for the new residents of the two new districts on the island if they had to travel to the mainland to get access to basic social services.
He said that in order for MLUH to allocate the houses currently under construction on the island to renters and buyers, facilities such as schools, transport, clinics, electricity and water, market place, shops, among others, should be ready and in place.

He also explained that the development project has also taken into consideration an industrial component for the island, in order to create jobs on the island, thus limiting significantly the movement of both traffic and people to and from the island.

The presentation of the Ile Perseverance development plan took place on Tuesday in the boardroom of the Ministry of Community Development at Oceangate House in the presence of the Minister for Community Development & Youth, Vincent Meriton.
