Book club to be launched soon |14 July 2007
What is a book club?
A book club is a group of people who have a keen interest in reading good books, and then meet to discuss the books they have agreed to select and read.
A book club usually consists of members who really love reading and will actually make the time to complete reading the selected book each month so that they can actively participate in sharing their views on the book at the meeting.
How will the book club function?
- Interested individuals may obtain a registration form from the National Arts Council
Offices (Stad Popiler car park) or register online at: nacs@seychelles.net, or call Tel: 295 200 if they require any further information.
- All registered members will be contacted by the National Arts Council once they have returned their forms.
- The deadline for the submission of registration forms is August 31, 2007.
- There will be a meeting to elect a Working Committee who will propose a draft constitution, which will eventually enable the book club to be officially registered and function like any other independent association affiliated with the National Arts Council.
- Members will propose a list of books they are interested in reading and the National Arts Council will assist in obtaining copies of the books for sale to the members.
- The National Arts Council will be setting up three different book clubs to cater for readers who are interested in the following kinds of books:
Literary Fiction
This club will interest members who read and appreciate literary bestsellers or books that have won highly acclaimed literary prizes such as the Nobel Prize for Literature (Sweden), the Booker Prize (U.K.), The Pulitzer Prize (USA), the Commonwealth Writers Prize, or even literary classics and bestsellers from international literature.
The Children’s Book Club
This is a club for young readers between the ages of 6 – 13. Adolescents above 13 may wish to join the other two clubs.
A facilitator will lead the discussion sessions in the Literary Fiction and the Children’s Book Club, and will also be responsible for preparing additional material for members, such as information about the author, reviews of the book, as well as discussion questions for the group.
3. Books on Spirituality and Personal Development
This club will operate differently from the literary club. Each member will be required to inform and discuss books on either spirituality or self development that have had a profound effect on them and helped to change their lives in some way.
There will be no facilitator in this group as each member will have a chance to talk about a book they want to share with others in the group.
