Ninth All-Africa Games in Algiers bad-Badminton |19 July 2007

JULIETTE Ah-Wan and partner Catherina Paulin were to be involved in the ladies' doubles quarterfinals yesterday of the badminton individual competition being played at the Salle OMS El Biar in Algiers.

Ah-Wan and Paulin eliminated an Algerian pair 2-0 in their first match and their quarterfinal opponents were from Nigeria.

In the men's doubles, Georgie Cupidon and Steve Malcouzane have won a bye and are to play Algeria.

As for Nicholas Jumaye, he has joined forces with Zambian Eli Mambwe to form a men's doubles team and they were to play Algeria yesterday.

The mixed doubles pair of Cupidon and Ah-Wan was to meet South Africa yesterday after benefitting from a bye earlier in the draw.

Malcouzane has Paulin as partner in the mixed doubles and they walked over Algeria in their first match on Tuesday and were to play Zambia yesterday.

Nicholas Jumaye and Cynthia Course form the third mixed doubles pair for Seychelles and after beating Ghana 2-0 on Tuesday, they were to play Nigeria yesterday.

In the men's singles, Jumaye whitewashed a Mauritian 2-0 in his first match before suffering the same ordeal against an Algerian.

For his part, Malcouzane showed an Algerian the exit and he was expected to take on Nigerian J. Iframimu yesterday.

It is to note that Cupidon is not taking part in the men's singles event.

In the ladies' singles, Paulin beat Nigerian G. Gabriel 2-0 and was expected to play an Egyptian yesterday.

Course walked over A. Hoeine of Algeria and was to meet African ladies' singles champion Grace Daniel of Nigeria yesterday.

Local number one female player Ah-Wan whitewashed Mauritian Kate Fookune 2-0 in her first match and was to meet Algerian A. Boudaoui yesterday.
