Golf: Home 2 Office tournament-Adam and Andrade combine well to triumph |28 July 2007
This competition was played in a better-ball medal format with teams of two vying for one of the exciting new gizmos from Xoro, recently launched in Seychelles by the sponsors.
There was a festive air around the club house with banners of Xoro displayed prominently and participants sporting polo shirts sponsored by Home 2 Office. The turnout was excellent with 19 teams of two teeing off as four-balls at 10-minute intervals from after midday.
Guy Adam and Godfrey Andrade set a blistering pace with their stupendous 25 net strokes on the front nine, which was equivalent to a net birdie almost every hole. Their nearest rivals were the teams of Anthony Lablache and Jerry Jean-Baptiste, and the young Rizvi brothers - Gibran and Maarej - with both pairs on 29 strokes net. Other good scores came from the father-and-son team of Robert and Johnny Savy on 30 net, while Alix Esparon and Zee Rizvi achieved a docile 31 net to keep themselves in contention.
Adam and Andrade kept up their tempo to return another fantastic 30 net for an almost insurmountable tally of 55 net. This left the rest of the field practically competing only for second and third places.
The Savys continued to play well and turned in their cards at 2 under par 32 net for a second place winning total of 62 net. The Rizvi brothers, playing for the first time in a major competition and as a team and also probably overawed by the stiff competition from their senior competitors, struggled to a total of 65 net.
Esparon and papa Rizvi, however, maintained their temperament to come back with 32 net for a count of 63 net, edging out Lablache/Jean-Baptiste on the same score but worse off on the countback, to bag third place.
The subsidiary nearest-to-the-pin prizes were won by Charlie Morin and Wilby Volcère.
The prizes were awarded by representatives from Home 2 Office and Xoro, Brigitte Ferrari, Salema and Dirk. Mrs Ferrari said they were privileged to be part of the sponsored golf scene in Seychelles and promised to continue their support in the years to come. Standing in proxy for the club captain, Zee Rizvi thanked the sponsors for their patronage.
