New R2.5m baggage conveyors at airport |06 August 2007
It was Leonard Pendergast
of UK suppliers Logan Teleflex Engineers who handed over the R2.5 million conveyors to Claude Mondon of the SCAA in the presence of different partners in air travel in the arrival lounge of the international airport.
Mr Mondon told Nation that it took one month, from June 19, to install the conveyors, each of which he said has a 76% efficiency compared to the older one, which carried baggage on just 38% of its length.
The engineer, who heads the technical services and engineering units in the capacity of general manager, said that with the two conveyors, it is possible to separate baggage from two different flights that might arrive at the same time.
“Alternatively, if there is only one flight, it is possible to place the baggage of first class passengers on one, and that of economy class travellers on the other. Likewise, it is possible to put crew’s baggage on a separate conveyor,” he said.
Technicians who will be manning the equipment received special training from the company that supplied and supervised its installation, and were presented with certificates by Mr Pendergast.
