Karting: National Championship-Denis, Thiroomooldy, Labrosse and Rene winners |17 October 2007
On a hot day where conditions were perfect for racing, the participants were eager to get going after a large field had turned up in all categories.
First off were the ladies and Mitra Labrosse took her first victory in only her second race, holding off the challenge of series leader Marie-Lucy Sullivan, who took second place despite her kart having a steering problem.
Debra Mellon took third place with Yashmin Ebrahim fourth and Diane Alvis fifth. With Labrosse’s win, the championship table is still wide open with two rounds to go but Sullivan still leads with 118 points followed by Mellon with 94, Alvis with 93, Ebrahim with 80, Labrosse with 32 and Kambaran with 30.
The cadet drivers were next in action and Franchisco Thiroomooldy took another impressive victory to consolidate first position on the table with 182 points.
Andrew Gabriel finished second and is also second on the table with 154 points, whilst part-time racer Wilven Philoé took third place. Yannick Gabriel finished fourth, Christian Moïse fifth, Didas Camille sixth and Jean-Philip Lalande seventh.
Camille has moved up to fourth place in the championship standings with 120 points, while Moïse is close behind with 116 points. In sixth place is Philoé with 99 points followed by Lalande with 77 points.
Ian Denis snatched a hard-fought victory from Junior class series leader Marc Delcy who took the lead on the final lap but was again overtaken by race winner Denis just before the finish line.
Dean De Commarmond finished third, Zayn Ebrahim fourth, Diane Alvis fifth and Stephan Simon sixth after suffering engine problems. Marc Delcy still holds a big lead in the championship with 194 points, whilst Ebrahim has moved up to second with 144 points. Simon is third with 141 points, Denis is fourth with 138 points, De Commarmond is fifth with 137 points and Diane Alvis is sixth with 108 points.
Dave Rene took victory in the Formula A class ahead of Liza Rene-Cosgrow. Roland Delcy was third.
What was expected to be an exciting final turned out to be a disappointing race for the three top finishers as first Trishen Kambaran, who ran close to Liza’s times over the weekend, could not get his kart started and fell off the pace. Peter Fred suffered the same fate and he too could not get going. The final race was thus cut short to 10 laps.
Dave still holds a 12-point lead on the table with 190 points. Liza is second on 178 points. Roland has made big strides to move into third place with 130 points, whilst Peter Fred is fourth with 110 points. John Simon, who raced in just one heat because of engine problem with his kart, has dropped to fifth place with 98 points, whilst Kambaran is in sixth position with 85 points.
The championship has only two more rounds left to run, and this year it is hoped that there will be a very exciting end come the Super Final as there will still be some drivers who could spring a surprise at the very end.
