Football: Barclays League division one-St Louis Suns United lose, finish third |05 November 2007

Playing in front of their supporters at the Baie Ste Anne Praslin playing field, Light Stars shot into the lead through Senky Vidot before Andrew Jean made it 2-0.

Congolese striker Jonathan Mbanze scored St Louis Suns United’s consolation goal against his former team from the penalty spot late in the match.

St Louis Suns United, who came into being after the merger of Sunshine and St Louis at the start of the year, have now lost two matches in a row, bringing their losing tally to four. They have won nine matches and drawn three for 30 points.

A win against Light Stars would have given them 33 points for the runners-up spot behind champions St Michel.

With 32 points (10 wins, two draws and four defeats) SMB, coached by Roger Labonté and Jeris César, have finished second.

In the day’s other scheduled match, relegated Red Star did not travel to La Digue, gifting last year’s champions Anse Réunion three points to bring their tally to 26 for fourth place.

It is to note that eighth-placed finishers Northern Dynamo and ninth-placed finishers Red Star will play second division football next year. This is because the Seychelles Football Federation’s executive committee decided at the start of the present season that the country’s first division football league will comprise eight teams.

As for seventh-placed Foresters, winners of the second division title in 2006, they will meet this year’s second division runners-up in the play-off, while the second division champions will win automatic promotion to the top flight.
