New security cameras in town |11 December 2007
17 cameras have already been installed and according to police spokesman Jean Toussaint the project will entail the installation of 42 cameras in total.
Though not officially operational, the cameras are already functioning on a trial basis and according to the police they are very effective.
The cameras’ locations were chosen based on the volume of activities that usually takes place in those areas.
During the other phases of the project, cameras are expected to be placed on the highway and on Ile Perseverance.
Initially three officers will be trained to handle and operate the camera systems.
The closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will transmit signals to a specific set of monitors which will be in an observation room at the Central Police Station.
These equipment are normally used to observe parts of an area that are remote from a control room, or where the environment is not comfortable for humans. CCTV systems may operate continuously, which will be the case here, or only to monitor a particular event.
