Campaign launched to tackle unlicensed drivers and vehicles |24 March 2008
The exercise has been mounted by the Police, the Land Transport Division as well as the Seychelles Licensing Authority.
They said that the move is just one initiative aimed at tackling the growing problem of unlicensed drivers and vehicles on public roads.
It is believed that there is quite a good number of drivers and vehicles on the roads that are unlicensed and/or uninsured and are, therefore, unsafe.
The authorities have given motorists a grace period until the end of March 2008 to allow for the renewal of the driving and road fund licences without having to pay surcharge. After that period, any unlicensed driver or vehicle detected by the police on public roads will be liable to pay the prescribed surcharge, which is a legal requirement; and prosecution may be instituted against them for any of the offences committed, as applicable.
The licensing authority and all its partners wish to remind all drivers and vehicle owners to take their responsibility seriously to ensure that their licences as well as insurance covers are in order when they are using public roads.
