Anse Etoile community gets new internet café |12 May 2008
Based at the District Administration’s office, the internet café is the outcome of a joint sponsorship between the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles and the Jj Spirit foundation, a non-governmental organization which works for the development and interests of the youth of Seychelles. President James Michel is the patron of the foundation.
It was Vice-President Joseph Belmont who officially inaugurated the internet café on Saturday in the presence of the Minister for Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture Vincent Meriton; the leader of government business in the National Assembly, Marie-Louise Potter; the President of the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles, N. Ramani; government and Anse Etoile District Administration’s officials.
In his address for the occasion, Minister Meriton explained that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is becoming an essential component of the developing world and that Seychelles, despite its size, is also doing its utmost to catch up with the rest of the world.
He said it was for this reason that the government felt the need to liberalise ICT in Seychelles, a decision which is also in line with our Constitution, that guarantees the right and access to ICT and freedom of speech among other rights.
Minister Meriton added that the new facility provides evidence that President Michel listens and attends to the needs of the youth in Seychelles and that the government is very sensitive to their aspirations.
On his part, Mr Ramani said that the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles and its partners have embarked on such project at an appropriate time, especially when the young minds are getting distorted by the influence of many social evils.
He added that the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles aims to extend the facility to all the districts in the country and that the club is inviting other organizations as well as individuals to join them in partnership to achieve this goal.
Similar internet cafes will be opened in other districts during this and next month.
