Activists march in support of HIV/Aids victims |20 May 2008
They did so in a show of compassion and solidarity with victims of the epidemic, through a candlelight memorial held at exactly the same time as in other Indian Ocean countries.
After marching silently through town with banners displaying their support, they gathered at Stad Popiler car park, where they shared a moment of reflection and lit candles in remembrance of departed victims and of the hardships people living with the disease endure every day.
Artists such as Patrick Joseph, Michelle Marengo and Sony D performed theme songs as the campaigners offered prayers and hope for those touched by HIV/Aids in any way. Testimonials of two people living with the virus were also read so people could better understand the prejudices they face daily.
At exactly 6pm – led by Designated Minister Danny Faure and Reginald Hoareau, one of the frontliners in the fight against HIV/Aids here – the marchers lit candles and placed them in two sandpits shaped like a heart.
Minister Faure was there representing Minister for Health and Social Development Marie-Pierre Lloyd, who was out of the country.
Also present was Employment and Human Resources Development Minister Macsuzy Mondon and the Aids programme manager at the Department of Health, Jeanine Faure.
The memorial procession was being held here for the fourth year, this time under the theme: Never give up, never forget this year.
