Cannery attracts students’ visit |28 June 2008
They paid a visit to the cannery early this month and were not disappointed by what they saw.
“They had some reservations at first, but once inside they were amazed at the complex system of man and machines working together to produce such a tasty end product,” their geography teacher Elaine Jumeau said after the visit.
She said they gained a more in-depth view on how the factory operates after spending a whole day looking round.
“The visit was also organised as a part of their studies on industry for their geography lesson,” Miss Jumeau said, adding that IOT was chosen in particular as it is one of the most prominent industries in the country.
“It is an area where students can acquire first-hand experience which can benefit them both in their studies and possible future careers.”
The S5 students were briefed on the many employment and career opportunities available at the factory and were able to get a better idea as they explored the different areas of the factory.
The students left the workplace fascinated by the variety of work that exists there, not only the tuna processing. A can-cutting session was organised so the youngsters could discover the science and technology in tuna processing and canning.
They also got a chance to sample a variety of canned tuna.
One of the managers, Guy Khan, gave the enthusiastic students an overview of the commercial and logistical aspects of canning, making them aware of the IOT’s international connections. They also learned that IOT contributes greatly to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Before leaving the factory, the visitors were given souvenir T-shirts with the company’s name on them.
At the end of the tour, the students said their views of IOT were quite positive.
