Subios man and woman-Winners promise to defend titles next year

Shrone Austin (swimming), Simone Jaffa (running) and Alexandra Kment (canoeing) teamed up to win the women’s contest in 22 minutes 58.8 seconds (22:58.8).

While Kment was absent, Austin and Jaffa collected their prizes from Michel Nalletamby, general manager tourism development at the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB).

Speaking to Sports Nation on behalf of the team, Austin said: “It was fun. It’s something different. We’ll try again next year.”

Second were Liza Mangroo (canoeing), Emmy Victor (swimming) and Stephanie Underwood (running) in 27:00.8, while the Praslin Girls team of Vanessa Narty (swimming), Hélène Rose (running) and Maryse Marie (canoeing) finished third in 28:22.0.

The Challenger team of swimmer Shane Mangroo, long-distance runner Simon Labiche and canoeist Tony Lespoir dominated the men’s competition to win in 19:43.9 and they received their prize from STB chief executive Maurice Loustau-Lalanne.

“We chose the right team members and did not have to train for the event. It was interesting and I’m sure we’ll be back in action again next year,” Labiche told Sports Nation.

Runners-up to Challenger were the Seychelles Lifesaving team of swimmer Darren Romain, runner Steven Labonté and canoeist Roger Jérémie in 21:15.5. Third place went to the Praslin team comprising Claude Adeline (swimming), Maroy Jean-Baptiste (running) and Juan Pillay (canoeing) in 22:20.8.

The winning teams won the big Subios man/woman trophies sponsored by Tom Bowers, a smaller trophy sponsored by the STB, certificates, R2,000 and one dive with equipment from Blue Sea Divers.

The runners-up got R1,000 and certificates, while the third finishers received R500 and certificates.
A total of 24 teams – seven women’s and 17 men’s – took part in the event, which comprised swimming for 300 metres, running for four kilometres and canoeing for 300 metres.

Two men’s teams failed to complete the course at Beau Vallon beach.
