Koste Seselwa, unite against climate change |23 April 2009
In the last three consecutive years the organisation has used climate change as its theme, which proves the severity of the problem and the concern of the world on this issue.
This year’s theme is appealing for a global cooperative effort to fight climate change. Seychelles, as a Small Island Developing State, is vulnerable to climate change impact. Therefore trying to raise awareness on this issue is very important for our small country.
Like last year, the Ministry of Education is organising several competitions around the theme of climate change, localised to reflect our national theme: Koste Seselwa, Unite against Climate Change.
Three competitions have been organised by the Environmental Education Unit in the Ministry of Education. First, under the theme Koste Seselwa, Unite Against Climate Change, a song competition has been launched for primary schools. The song must not be longer than three minutes and must reflect the theme.
Under the same theme, a poem competition has been launched, divided into three categories: primary, secondary and post-secondary.
The third competition is a short essay to be written under the theme: “As a young Seychellois, why are you concerned about climate change?”
This competition is open for P5-P6 students with an essay of up to 150 words; secondary students with up to 400 words and post-secondary with up to 600 words.
For all the competitions mentioned, any of the three national languages can be used – Creole, English and French.
The deadline for the poem and essay competitions is May 22, 2009. Poems and stories can be handed in to the school environmental representative or sent to the Environmental Education Unit, Ministry of Education, Mont Fleuri.
Last year the unit organised similar competitions and the songs, poems and short plays were performed in the Children’s Climate Change Show.
Since then, there have been many requests from schools, parents and the public in general for a similar event. However, due to budgetary constraints, the unit is not sure it will take place again this year.
