Hindu chariot procession on Sunday in Victoria |20 August 2009
This festival is celebrated all over the Hindu world to mark the anniversary of Lord Vinayagar, the elephant god and presiding deity of the Seychelles Hindu temple.
The Navasakthi Vinayagar temple on Quincy Street is organising the traditional decorated chariot procession, which will begin in the temple courtyard and move along Revolution Avenue, Harrison Street and Lodge Street. It will start at 7pm and is expected to last about an hour.
The special importance of this year’s procession is that the Seychelles Hindu Kovil Sangam is celebrating 25 years in Seychelles, and the organisers plan to release a souvenir memento to commemorate the event.
The procession features traditional music and usually attracts a large crowd of devotees, tourists and the general public.
