Subios painting, poem and story competitions launched |27 August 2009

The Subios (Sub-Indian Ocean Seychelles) Underwater Festival has in the past played an important role in educating our people, especially our children on the importance of the sustainable use of marine resources and ecosystems.

This marine festival has, over the years, attracted many young people to a variety of marine education activities.

This year, as in the past, three competitions are being organised, under the theme: Diving the Granitic Isles of Gondwana.

First there is a painting competition, which is divided into three categories: primary, secondary and post-secondary/public.
The second is the poem competition and, like the others, it is divided into primary, secondary and post-secondary/public categories.

The third is the story competition, and the number of words varies according to the categories: primary – 300 words; secondary – 500 words and post-secondary – 1,000 words. For the poem and story competitions, contestants can use any of the three official languages – English, Creole and French. They must write the following details on the back of their work: name, class and school.

All three competitions need to show creativity, originality and, most importantly, need to reflect this year’s festival theme: Diving the Granitic Isles of Gondwana.

Unlike many other diving destinations, Seychelles offers people a special natural marine habitat to explore, the underwater granitic habitats. Beautiful granitic boulders along our coastal granitic islands are rich in marine biodiversity and have attracted many international divers. This year’s work needs to reflect the theme above.

All entries for the competitions must reach the Environmental Education Unit, Ministry of Education, by Wednesday September 23, 2009. Winners will receive their prizes during the Subios Festival in October. Good luck.
