Sports Awards of the Year 2009-Contenders for top honours chosen |07 January 2010

Athletes chosen by their federations and associations will run for four titles – Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Young Female Athlete of the Year and Young Male Athlete of the Year.

Five male and five female young athletes will be shortlisted for the Young Male and Young Female Athletes of the Year titles, and all five will be rewarded during the crowning ceremony.

In the senior category, 10 men and 10 women chosen from the original list handed in by federations and associations will run for the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year titles. The top five in each category will receive prizes.

There will also be awards for disabled athlete of the year, volunteer of the year, coach of the year, sports federation/association of the year, official of the year and best educational institution of the year. Honorary sports awards will also be given out on the day.

Javelin specialist Lindy-Leveau Agricole and canoeist Tony Lespoir are the outgoing Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.
Badminton player Joel Dubel, who is in China on a five-year scholarship and will study and train at the Physical Education College of Shanghai University, has won the Young Male Athlete of the Year title for the past two years.

The outgoing Young Female Athlete of the Year is volleyballer Marielle Bonne, who plays for Volley-Ball Tulle Naves in the French second division.

This time the ceremony, scheduled to start at 6.30pm, has been switched from the International Conference Centre to the NSC Exhibition Hall, Roche Caïman.

All those coming to the ceremony should be seated by 6.15pm. Tickets are on sale at R500 at the NSC, Stad Linite.
