First phase of Haiti appeal to close |27 January 2010
Funds received so far will be transferred to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). After this, any person or organisation wishing to make a donation will be able to do so only at the RCSS HQ.
The amount of money raised in Seychelles to help the people of Haiti, devastated by the earthquake of January 12, will be revealed at a press conference the RCSS is holding next Monday.
The chairman of the IFRC’s Finance Commission, Seychellois Chrystold Chetty, will be there to explain the procedures for forwarding donations in such cases.
There are now 15 national Red Cross societies working alongside the Haitian Red Cross.
On a recent visit to Haiti, IFRC president Tadateru Konoé said: “What I have seen in Haiti is beyond any crisis I have experienced before during my entire Red Cross/Red Crescent life.
“This crisis, an extreme natural event occurring in the lives of people who are already frighteningly vulnerable, is affecting millions of people.”
The Red Cross set up collection points on Market Street, Victoria, on two consecutive Saturdays from 8.30am to 1pm, and there were other collection points on Praslin and La Digue.
