Seychelles-Mexico cooperation set to grow |19 May 2010
New Mexican ambassador to Seychelles Luis Javier Campuzano said this after presenting his credentials to President James Michel at State House yesterday.
Present were foreign affairs principal secretary Barry Faure and secretary of state Jean-Paul Adam.
Mr Campuzano said the two countries have a very good bond and should expand their trade relationship, taking into account the strategic position of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
“We can also address the international agenda such as climate change issues, as Mexico is due to hold the COP-16 meeting at the end of this year and we are looking forward to having a good outcome,” he said.
COP is the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and COP-16 will be a follow-up to the Copenhagen, Denmark (COP-15) meeting held last December.
Climate change matters such as sea-level rise are global issues but have more impact on small island states, Mr Campuzano added.
After meeting Mr Michel, he also called on Vice-President Joseph Belmont to discuss tourism-related issues and greater scope to widen the two countries’ cooperation.
Mr Campuzano, who will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, is the third Mexican ambassador to be accredited to Seychelles.
He replaces Juan Carlos Cue Vega, who was accredited in 2006.
