Roche Caïman gets new internet café |19 October 2010
The Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC), the Department of Community Development, the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles, the Jj Spirit Foundation and Cable & Wireless Seychelles joined together to open this new service.
Designated Minister Vincent Meriton – who is also responsible for Community Development, Youth and Sports – was joined by Lions Club president Siva Pillay at the official opening and unveiling of the plaque at Roche Caïman community centre on Friday.
Other guests included principal secretary for youth and sports Denis Rose, the district’s National Assembly member Joevana Charles, executive director of the Jj Spirit Foundation Eddie Charles, SNYC chief executive Edith Alexander and C&W chief executive Charles Hammond.
Also present were representatives of all the sponsors, students and young people of the district.
Addressing the guests, Miss Alexander said the internet café is a new step in the development of services for young people.
“This internet café shows the government’s commitment, and that of other partners involved, to allow the young people to stay up to date with the latest developments in the world of technology and information,” she said.
The government, through the SNYC, is convinced that such facilities are important in the development of young people, and to have such a service is among the hopes of young people in all the districts, she added.
Thanking all the sponsors, Miss Alexander said the SNYC will continue to support the young people of Seychelles and called on them to appreciate the opportunities given to them.
She also urged them to contribute to and get involved in the youth programme at district, regional and national levels.
The new internet café will be open to the youths of Roche Caïman and other districts in the region. Districts that already have such a service include Anse Etoile, Anse Boileau, Mont Fleuri and Praslin.
On behalf of all young people in the district, Emmy Alcindor thanked the sponsors for the café and called on other partners and businesses to come forward to help the government on projects to benefit the youth of Seychelles.
Mr Pillay said this new service is more of an investment in the young people of Seychelles than a sponsorship.
He also launched a lottery with Mr Meriton during the ceremony, from which the funds will be used to help set up more internet cafés, bus shelters and other community projects.
After the unveiling of the plaque, the guests had a chance to tour the café.
