Shana David’s sign of success for deaf people

Miss DavidMiss David, a teacher of the deaf and the first Miss Deaf Seychelles, will give her presentation in sign language.

Her subject will be the work of the Association of People with Hearing Impairment (APHI), its achievements and the challenges faced by deaf people in Seychelles.

This third workshop of the Africa Contact Group for Mental Health and Deafness will take place from February 7-11 with around 150 delegates from African countries present.

APHI chairperson Anita Gardner has also been invited, and they will both take the opportunity to make contacts with their African counterparts, to discuss deaf issues and establish networking.

Mrs Gardner said: “Shana is training hard as she will be giving the presentation throughout in sign language.

“The APHI is very proud of her, and this again proves that the deaf can, and should, be given the opportunity to take part in fields that concern them.”

All expenses for the mission have been sponsored by the Friends of Effatha foundation, which is administered by the DeafNET Centre of Knowledge of the South African National Institute for the Deaf.
