Seychelles toasts 150 years of Italian unity

On behalf of the people and government of Seychelles, President Michel said this Minister Adam and Mr Izzi proposing a toast at last Thursday’s ceremonyanniversary was a testament of the true spirit of unity of the Italian people and a show of solidarity to be emulated by other nations.

“Seychelles too shares the same beliefs and we are committed to promoting and sustaining our solidarity,” said the President in his message.

“As one of the first countries to recognise our independence, Italy has always been bound together with Seychelles by the strong principles and virtue shared by our two nations. I am convinced that this excellent relationship will gain fresh impetus and strengthen the existing bond between our two countries.”

At an event held on Thursday night to celebrate the occasion, Foreign Affairs minister Jean-Paul Adam addressed the Italian community in Seychelles on behalf of the government and proposed a toast in the name of the Presidents of the two countries.

“Italy has demonstrated that progress is faster and more effective when done in a unified manner,” he said.

“They have shown how some things – different and unique – come together to create something beautiful, and Seychelles, like Italy, is a nation that has had to be forged.”

The Italian honorary consul to Seychelles, Claudio Izzi, addressed the gathering and spoke of the remarkable history and achievements of Italy and the passion the local Italian community in contributing to similar development in Seychelles.

“150 years of Italy, of people with undeniable skill and who have been exporting talent, culture and spirit of enterprise all over the world. Here today, we have a proud group of those Italians who have chosen to make a significant contribution in the development of Seychelles – a country much younger than ours but one that is paving the way for a bright future.”

Seychelles and Italy established diplomatic relations on the June 29, 1976.
