Jewellery Gallery of Victoria opens its doors |11 June 2011
The shop is located in the ex-Adam Moosa Building and is owned by the well-known Deenu Pillay, assisted by designers Victoria and Robert Contoret.
The shop has been decorated with much taste in purple with a chic ornamental touch, quite remote from the hardware store that it once was.
It boasts a range of necklaces, pendants, bracelets, rings and jewels made by state-of-the-art craftsmen in Italy and the Czech Republic.
Victoria, who comes from Prague, where husband Robert spent two years learning the tricks of the trade, explains that many are set with natural stones, including pearls, while others are bijouterie from old Czech glass.
According to her, the quality is high, while prices are affordable.
She showed Nation a set of a three-lined necklace with blue agathe stones with bracelet selling for R3134.
A necklace of tiger eye stones -- not from South Africa but from Central Europe -- is selling for R1081.
As for engagement and wedding rings, the Jewellery Gallery has samples by which clients can check for size and design before orders are sent to Europe.
The engagement rings are usually white gold set with diamond, while silver rings are normally set with cubic zircon.
For those with a low budget and not too concerned with the too chic, there are bangles made from glass crystal from as low as R72 apiece.
You can see the whole selection with Jacqueline Braganza, the beautiful Seychelloise of a Goan parentage, quite a gem herself!
Customers are also issued with a certificate of quality, stating the gold carats or quality of diamond, emerald or saphir, leaving them in do doubt about the excellence of the latest treasures in their collection.
Many of the jewellery on display were shown on Tuesday to guests from local connoisseurs from existing jewellery and craft businesses.
