8th Indian Ocean Island Games – August 5-14, 2011-‘Team Seychelles is ready’ |02 August 2011
Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Vincent Meriton said this during yesterday morning’s sending-off ceremony at the International Conference Centre.
President James Michel, Vice-President Danny Faure, Ministers Erna Athanasius, Bernard Shamlaye, Jean-Paul Adam and Peter Sinon, and other guests attended the ceremony.
During the presentation ceremony of ‘Team Seychelles’, the athletes of the 12 sporting disciplines modelled their new team sportswear and the team officials, trainers and athletes were presented. There were also performances of songs and dance which will be used during the Games.
“The ball is in your court,” continued Minister Meriton. “You have trained hard over the past years and we expect you to better the results of the last Games in Madagascar – 35 gold medals.
“We count on you not to let anyone down. Give your very best for your own pride and for the love of Seychelles,” added Minister Meriton who thanked all sponsors, volunteers and all who have worked on the organising committee for their valuable contributions.
The minister called on all the athletes to show a high level of discipline during the Games.
“It’s make or break,” he said. “You always have to give a 100% in whatever you do.”
Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) president Antonio Gopal reiterated Minister Meriton’s words, adding that discipline should start with the coaches and team managers.
“Discipline is the key to success and we count on you to take your responsibility during the Games to bring the best possible results for yourselves and Seychelles,” said Mr Gopal.
The local Olympic boss noted that the level of Seychelles’ sports continues to rise and all athletes should take this opportunity to make a name for themselves.
Badminton player Georgie Cupidon thanked the Seychelles government, schools, employers and everyone who have helped them in one way or another in their preparation for the Games.
“Victory for Seychelles,” said two-time former Sportsman of the Year Cupidon.
