President Michel also took this opportunity to thank the Government of India for its enduring support of Seychelles:

“India has been a most committed partner overall and has in the last few years been consistent in helping us in the fight against piracy in the Indian Ocean.

“The Government of Seychelles anticipates the continuation of successful collaborations and hopes that the excellent ties between our two nations based on mutual friendship, respect and understanding prolong.”

The President concluded by conveying sincerest well wishes for continued progress and prosperity for the people of India.

Meanwhile a flag hoisting ceremony was held yesterday at the Indian high commission, Le Chantier, to mark the occasion.

The ceremony was held in the presence of the new Indian high commissioner to Seychelles Thanglura Darlong as well as a number of Indian nationals living in Seychelles.

Those present heard a message from the Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil who said the day takes Indians back to the events that made their country a free nation.

In her message, she said the real strength of a nation is judged not by the challenges it faces, but by its responses.

She reminded them not to forget that the purpose of all their efforts is to move on the path of progress while ensuring that morals and ethics in the Indian society do not get eroded.

She called on all citizens to pledge that they will work with full commitment and dedication, honesty and integrity and with a sense of pride.
