Handball: Au Cap Sisters, Durantha Brothers winners |27 February 2014

Au Cap Sisters and Durantha Brothers have replaced MF Storm and AC Brothers as the Challenge Cup winners after triumphing in Sunday’s finals.

The competition was held last weekend at the Palais des Sports with teams competing over two days for the first trophy of the year.

For the women, Au Cap Sisters – who beat last year’s league champions MF Storm in the quarter finals in a closely fought match which ended 12-11 -- were left as the favourites to win the tournament. They got an easy win in the semifinals as they powered past APC Sisters 23-6 to book their place in the final.

Their opponents in the final would be Teenz, who got a bye in the quarterfinals and therefore met RC Diamond in the semifinal. It was a close match, but in the end it was Teenz who managed to clinch a 13-12 victory to set up a final clash against Au Cap Sisters.

In the final, Marie-Claire Chetty, who has just joined Au Cap Sisters from MF Storm, inspired her side to victory with seven goals as Au Cap Sisters won the match with a fairly straightforward 23-7 final score to finish as the women’s Challenge Cup winners 2014.

For the men, Durantha Brothers got off to a good start as they won their quarter final clash on a 33-18 score against last year’s winners AC Brothers. That win set up a semi final clash against Juniors where they dominated the match to win it 34-14 to progress to the final.

Young Eagles showed that they are stronger this season as they claimed a tight victory over Super 8 in the quarter final. They did not have to break a sweat to make it through to the final though as their opponents PLS Hurricanes failed to show up for their semi final clash and therefore Young Eagles progressed to the final on a walk-over.

In the final, Durantha Brothers again showed that they will be a dominant force in local handball as they managed to win the match 34-25 to claim their first trophy of the season. Franky Commettant of Durantha Brothers led the scoring with six goals.
