Feedback on theme ‘Respect’ for February month at the school
Introduction
The English River secondary school was chosen to launch the theme ‘RESPECT’ for the month of February.
This activity was held on Thursday February 6 according to plan. A mural with a slogan ‘Avek lanmour ek respe nou determinen pour progre ek sikse nou lekol’ was done to display the way the school views the theme. Apart from the head teacher of the school, the head boy and head girl were two other speakers in the special assembly who gave the definition of the theme and also talked about the value of respect.
Strengths
After one month, members of the Students Forum, teachers, parents and members of the public had had the chance to make the following comments on the impact of the activity:
• Students say that there is improvement in the way students respect teachers. Students are punctual to school. This means that they respect the bell time and are early to start the lesson.
• Students say that most students respect the school regulations and code of conduct during these four weeks. They continue to say that even though some students lack respect and discipline, they still have made some change.
• Students know the value of respect now and say that they need it in their everyday life, in their neighbourhood, in society and especially at school. They say that if you are respectful, you are a good person and polite.
• Students say that respect helps immensely in communication between teachers and students.
• Parents believe that the school had taken a good initiative to display the theme as a mural as it explains clearly its position where respect is concerned.
• Parents say that students of English River school have made great improvement behaviour wise. They board the buses early and are quiet on school bus. They are more focused and the school is quiet.
• Members of the public say that the mural has given the school a new look compared to all the negative things that have been said about the school. When looking at the mural, some feel like stepping into an aquarium of living things, some passers-by say.
• Members of staff feel that the school is calmer. There has been a transformation in students’ behaviour though not a hundred percent and say that they can teach good lessons now.
• The S1 and S2 students respect the new facility and are starting to decorate it in any way they can.
Constraints
• Parents should make it their duty to live this value for their child to follow
• The S1 and S2 are slowly adapting and need more attention
• Some/ few students are still coming late to school
• Same students repeating same offences though parents have been called in several times
• School receives limited support from parents
Conclusion/Recommendations
The launch of this theme ‘respect’ at the school has reminded us all that there should be love and respect in all that we do for the betterment of our students. Respect is reciprocal and it should be practiced by all people living in the same community, the school. If we all respect the school rules and work ethics, we will surely make a difference in our school.
Therefore, we strongly believe that there should be ongoing activities to continue educating students and parents. It has been proposed to display other themes in/near the conference room where most meetings are being held with students’ misbehaving as a reminder and deterrent.
