Golf - Anthony wins New Emerald Cove tournament |18 March 2014
In the sweltering midday sun on Saturday, Daryl Anthony, a young promising Seychellois golfer playing off a handicap of nine, emerged victorious in the New Emerald Cove golf tournament.
Around 40 golfers registered for the tournament with fantastic prizes on offer by the sponsors. Played under the points scoring system known as Stableford, the front nine was hotly contested with the likes of Bruce Horner (21 points), Alix Esparon (20 points), Daryl Anthony (19 points) and a few others carding excellent scores.
It was clear that the heat would play a major role on the back nine and that the fitness levels of all the golfers would be strongly tested. Having carded an average front nine score of 16 points, David Deltel, who plays off a seven handicap, lit up the back nine with a one over par gross score to card 21 points and set the club house lead at 37 points.
It was now a waiting game to see if anyone else could top this score! Indeed, someone did it and half hour later, Daryl Anthony entered the club house with a brilliant total score of 39 points (20 points on the back nine) to relegate David into second place and walk away with a voucher for three nights stay for two persons at the prestigious hotel located on Praslin island.
Alix Esparon also totalled 37 points, but lost out to David who had a better back nine score and therefore settled for third place. David and Alix both won a two night stay and a one night stay voucher for two on half board respectively plus Callaway gift packs for their efforts.
On hand to present the winners with their prizes were New Emerald Cove representatives, brothers Paolo and Stefano Chionni, both avid golfers themselves. They were helped by club captain Alex Ellenberger.
Subsidiary prizes were won by Bruce Horner (best front nine), Charlie Morin (best back nine), Catney Laporte (nearest to the pin) and Daryl Anthony (nearest to the pin in two shots). There was also a special prize for the best lady golfer won by Peggy Pragassen who carded 30 points on the day.
