Azemia wins 400m hurdles bronze medal
Ned Azemia picked up Seychelles’ third bronze medal at the second African Youth Games which end today in Gaborone, Botswana.
Azemia’s bronze medal came in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.27 seconds. The gold medal went to Tunisia’s Mohammed Jlassi who managed a time of 51.52 seconds with Geoffrey Kipngetich of Kenya coming in second place in 52.76 seconds.
Azemia’s time allowed him to qualify for the World Youth Championship to be held in the United States of America. He did not qualify for the Youth Olympic Games, however, as only the first two finishers were picked.
In cycling, the 104km road race was held on Thursday and all our three cyclists were in action. Fadi Confiance was the fastest Seychellois as he finished in 13th place, two places ahead of Edrick Roucou who was 15th. They both crossed the finish line in 2 hours 35 minutes 47 seconds (2h35:47).
The other Seychelles cyclist Mario Joubert failed to complete the race as he suffered a punctured tyre early in the race.
It was Moroccan Abderrahim Zahir who won the race in 2h31:53.
Judoka Nantenaina Finesse earned Seychelles its first ever gold medal at these Games after his opponent failed to turn up for the final.
Young boxer Kevin Kilindo won the country its second gold medal on Wednesday. After receiving a favourable draw to qualify straight for the final, Kilindo fought a Nigerian and won on a 3-0 score to grab the gold medal.
The other two bronze medals were won by swimmer Felicity Passon in the 50m butterfly (29.14 seconds) and 50m freestyle (27.37 seconds) events.
The 50m freestyle time earned Passon qualification for the Olympic Youth Games slated for Nanjing, China from August 16-28, 2014.
