Yasmin Ghislain is Miss Regatta 2014 |25 September 2014

Twenty-year-old Yasmin Ghislain was crowned Miss Regatta 2014 during a nearly three-hour long spectacle on Tuesday night at the International Conference Centre (ICCS).

Absent from the Round Table Seychelles’ (RTS) Regatta programme for the last three years, the Miss Regatta pageant made a comeback this year with a pleasant twist to it in the sense that it took place simultaneously with (and on the same stage as) the Mr Regatta bodybuilding show.

Yasmin was followed in second place by Simone Sauzier as her first princess and Berina Saunders as second princess.
“I was shocked, really shocked, I nearly froze,” Yasmin said, barely able to control her emotions.

“Frankly speaking I never thought I would win the crown since I did not win any other titles up for grabs that night. Winning the pageant will allow me to join the RTS on its charitable activities aimed at helping those in need. And I hope that I can work on my project which is educating young people on the dangers of early sex,” Yasmin added.

In total ten girls from around Mahé – Berina Saunders, Yanny Isaac, Joanna Pouponneau, Simone Sauzier, Ginnie Bibi, Yasmin Ghislain, Verona Leon, Shamla Mangroo, Ruth Bonte and Tracy Adela – took part in the pageant which was watched by Designated Minister Vincent Meriton, RTS president Vincent Lee Kimkoon, its chairman Shantilal Jivan, other members and the general public.

Giving words of encouragement to the Miss Regatta contestants, as well as the guys who were contesting the Mr Regatta title, Minister Meriton read out a message from President James Michel: “It is always a great pleasure to be part of the popular Regatta charity events. Regatta 2014 gives me another opportunity to express my support to the young professionals of Round Table Seychelles for organising the event. I congratulate you all for another successful organisation of the many well liked activities. My family and I join with the people of Seychelles in appreciating the work you are doing; indeed you are bringing positive changes to the lives of many. RTS members are examples of civil society groups that are giving something back to society,” President Michel’s message read.

After reading President Michel’s message, Minister Meriton handed it to Messrs Jivan and Kimkoon.

Judging the pageant was a jury panel of five – Agnes Jerry (Miss Seychelles… Another World 2013), Kevin Perine, Stephanie Duval (Miss Regatta 2007), Christine Chetty and Nigel Pillay, the longest serving member of RTS.

The girls paraded in their casual wear, swim wear and evening wear. Berina Saunders won the Best Evening Wear Award while Shamla Mangroo won the People’s Choice Award (whereby the public voted for their favourite contestant). The Miss Photogenic title went to Ginnie Bibi.

A new feature of the pageant this year was that the contestants had to come up with a project that will help the community. The award for the best project went to Simone Sauzier, who also clinched the Miss Personality title besides being crowned First Princess.
During the pageant there were performance from local artists Tania, Sandra, Jahkim, Ion Kid and Travis.

The team behind the organisation of the event are Vincent Kimkoon (producer), Terry Carolla (artistic director), Cheryl Alphonse (logistic), Asha Emilien (secretary) and Petra Tamatave (catwalk trainer and back stage coordinator).
