Women’s football - Lioness seal double |02 December 2014
Women’s football has seen a revival this year with a seven-team league played over two rounds as well as a knockout competition.
On Saturday the knockout final was played and Lioness emerged victorious to complete a league and cup double.
Lioness met Victoria City in the final at Stad Popiler and they cruised past their opponents on a 7-1 score to add another piece of silverware to their season, having already sealed the league title.
The team completed the league season with a 100% record, meaning they won all of their 12 games, conceding only six goals and scoring a total of 56. Their title-clinching win came in their final match when they defeated rivals La Digue 3-0 to finish five points clear at the top with 36 points.
La Digue, meanwhile, had to settle for the runners-up spot with 31 points. La Digue’s only defeat was the one conceded on the final day against the champions and they also dropped points against Rovers in a draw.
Rovers finished third and knockout losing finalist Victoria City fourth.
At the bottom of the table lie Anse Boileau who could not muster a single point as they finished the season with 3 goals scored and 60 conceded. Maki FC finished sixth having collected their only victory against west Mahé side Agrics.
