International Volunteer Day |05 December 2014
‘Life is much more than our individual ambition’
“We can all through volunteerism contribute more, play a bigger role, be more active and together make a greater difference in our communities.”
The remark comes in a message by the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Vincent Meriton on the occasion of the International Volunteer Day today.
The full text of Minister Meriton’s message reads:
“Today, December 5, we join the world to celebrate International Volunteer Day.
“This is a day to not only celebrate volunteerism in all its facets – it also provides an opportunity to pay special tribute to people’s participation in making a difference locally, nationally and globally. It highlights the contribution of volunteers in engaging people from the grass-roots in decision-making processes, ultimately creating space for participation that leads to stronger governance, social cohesion, peace and sustainable development.
“As 2014 comes to an end, many of us will look back and reflect on all that was accomplished throughout the year. But this is also a time to look ahead with a renewed sense of passion and excitement at the next 12 months. It is a time to set goals and targets and make the changes that will improve our lives.
“International Volunteer Day provides all of us with inspiration. This occasion reminds us that life is much more than our individual ambition. We can all through volunteerism, contribute more, play a bigger role, be more active and together make a greater difference in our communities.
“The act of volunteering is a selfless one. But it can also be one of the most empowering acts. For volunteering do not just help us make the lives of others better, it also makes us better.
“On this day, I call on all Seychellois to be more engaged. To make time for a good cause and for others. We have many challenges before us but we also have many opportunities to contribute and make a difference. Our schools are in need of volunteers. When we come forward it is our own children who will benefit.
Our communities are in need of volunteers. More of us can be leaders, can bring expertise and guidance to improve the lives and well-being of our youth, elderly and disabled. So many of our young men in prison and rehabilitation centres need the services of others. Many of our families need support to face the challenges of our times. By volunteering, we can remind them that society has not abandoned them, that we will walk by their side on the road to recovery, encouraging them to live well as accomplished citizens.
There are so many worthy causes that we can be a part of in 2015. Let us therefore come forward and give at least one hour of our time a week to a cause that is close to our heart. This is what the Social Renaissance Initiative is about. It is about rediscovering our humanity, compassion and sense of community. It is about giving, caring and sharing.
“I wish all the individuals and organisations who are leading by examples through their dedication and selfless actions each day a Happy Volunteer Day. You make Seychelles a better place and on behalf of government and the population I thank you all.”
