Boxing - Allisop remains Seychelles’ top boxer |03 January 2015
Andrique Allisop is Seychelles’ best boxer for the year 2014 after once again producing some great performances in international competitions.
Local boxers were rewarded late last year in a small gathering at the sports’ training ground – the Nation Sports Council (NSC) Hall, Roche Caïman.
Allisop was the 60kg weight class gold medallist after defeating Namibian Shanningwa Lazarus 3-0 in the final at the fifth Africa Boxing Cup held in South Africa, a performance he described as the best he has ever produced on the continent.
He also won all his previous three bouts on points. In the preliminaries he beat Algerian Ziani Djoudi 3-0, before eliminating Tienmeni Ngamaleup of Cameroon by the same score. His toughest fight was in the semifinal where he faced a Moroccan Khollouk Driss and he managed a narrow 2-1 win to progress to the final.
Former Sportsman of the Year Allisop also won gold at the Limassol Open in Cyprus and was part of Seychelles’ team at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where despite not winning a medal he managed to enhance his reputation as a top boxer.
Runner-up to Allisop is Keddy Agnes who just missed out on a gold medal at the Limassol Open, where after leading his opponent in the first two rounds of the final, he slipped and hurt his leg, meaning he could not continue and thus lost due to a TKO.
Police officer Agnes was also a medal winner at the fifth Africa Boxing Cup, winning a bronze medal in the 91+kg category after losing in the semifinal to a South African opponent. He was also a member of Team Seychelles at the XX Commonwealth Games.
Kevin Kilindo was named the young boxer of the year after winning the silver medal at the Africa Youth Championship in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Kilindo earned a bye straight into the final where he lost to Algerian Bouzid Youcef on a 3-0 score.
Other awards presented during the ceremony went to Rival Payet (boxing coach of the year), Gerry Legras (best coordinator), Roland Raforme (boxing development) and Edmond Folette (best administrator).
