Sports Awards of the Year 2014 - Who will succeed Dugasse and Agricole? |09 January 2015

The 2014 sports season is over and many athletes have stood out among the rest in the various sporting competitions organised. However, the big question among sports fans now is who will succeed Dominic Dugasse and Clementina Agricole as Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year or will they be able to retain their crown?

Yes Dugasse and Agricole stand a chance of retaining their crowns as they have again been nominated as the best in their sports.

Judoka Dugasse was named the top sportsman of 2013 after managing some impressive results both locally and internationally. Among them was the -100kg gold medal at the African Open Championship in Mauritius and the gold medal in the same category at the Seychelles International Judo Tournament held locally. At the African Senior Championship he was ranked fifth in the -100kg class, but finished seventh at both the European Cup in Germany and the Bondie Cup in France. He also took part in the Grand Prix in Paris, France, the World Senior Championship in Brazil and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where he was ranked 54th worldwide, making a huge leap from his previous ranking of 135th.

As for female weightlifter Clementina Agricole, she made a stunning comeback to the sport to be named the best female athlete of 2013 after winning a silver medal in the 58kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Penang, Malaysia where she finished with an Olympic total of 190kg (85kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk).

Weightlifting dominated the 2013 awards as the young athletes of the year awards went to two young lifters – Romentha Larue (female) and Rick Confiance (male).

The best in Seychelles sports for the year 2014 will be known during the crowning ceremony on Friday January 30 at the National Sports Council Hall, Roche Caïman.

Not only athletes, but officials, coaches and volunteers will also be rewarded for the efforts throughout the 2014 sports season.
The organisers of the event, the National Sports Council, have said they have not yet set a price for the tickets for the event and will make an announcement in due course.

Although we won’t know if Dugasse and Agricole would be able to keep their titles, we now know who run a chance of winning the awards after sports federations and associations, except for rugby and cricket, have handed in the names of the best athletes.
