Volleyball: 25th African Women’s Club Championship - Al-Ahly crowned champions |07 April 2015

Egypt’s Al-Ahly are the Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship winners for a sixth time.

In Sunday’s final of the 25th championship played at the 6 October Hall in Cairo, Egypt, in front of 2,000 spectators, Ah-Ahly defeated record holders Kenya Pipelines 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26).

The title was Al-Ahly’s first since their 2009 triumph in Nairobi, Kenya when they defeated Kenya Commercial Bank 3-1 in the final. It was also their sixth after previous triumphs in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2009. Kenyan Pipeline, formerly known as Posta Kenya, have won the title seven times in 1991, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.
Meanwhile in the third place match, Carthage of Tunisia topped Shams (Egypt) 3-2 (25-17, 31-29, 20-25, 17-25, 16-14) to bag the bronze medal.

After the final match Fédération Internationale de Volley-ball executive vice-president and CAVB president Dr Amr Elwani accompanied by the representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Egypt, Dr Moustafa Azzam, and Egyptian Volleyball Federation president Foad Abdel Salam crowned Al-Ahly with the cup and gold medals, Pipeline with the silver and Tunisia’s Carthage with the bronze.

Seychelles’ representatives Arsu finished in ninth place out of 13 teams. After losing all their three pool D matches, Arsu were forced to play the playoffs like the other teams who had not made it to the quarterfinals and they won their three games.

The individual prizes have gone to Maraim Metwally of Al-Ahly (Best Blocker and Most Valuable Player), Ruth Jepngetich of Kenya Pipeline (Best Spiker), Marwa Brahoumi of Carthage (Best Server), Nehal Gamal of Shams (Best Blocker), Janet Wanja of Kenya Pipelines (Best Setter), Maraim Moustafa of Al-Ahly (Best Libero).

The final ranking: 1. Al-Ahly (Egypt), 2. Pipeline (Kenya), 3. Carthage (Tunisia), 4. Shams (Egypt), 5. GS Pétroliers (Algeria), 6. FAP (Cameroon), 7. Vision Volleyball Club (Uganda), 8. FAP (Cameroon), 9. Arsu (Seychelles), 10. Injis (Cameroon), 11. KCB (Kenya), 12. Kutlwano (Botswana), and 13. Saltigue (Senegal).
