Athletics: 2nd Youth African Championship - Brioche wins silver for Seychelles |28 April 2015

High Jumper Noris Brioche will be justly proud of his performance as he won Seychelles’ only medal at the 2nd Youth African Championships held in Mauritius last week.

Brioche managed a jump of 2.01m, which was enough to earn him a silver medal at the competition. The gold medal went to Aobakwe Nkobela of Botswana, who cleared the bar at 2.04m.

The team that represented Seychelles comprised seven track & field athletes aged between 15 and 17 years old.

Female high jumper Natacha Chetty flirted with a bronze medal as she eventually just missed out, with her performance of 1.55m not enough to give her third place. Morocco’s Fatima El Alaoui clinched the bronze medal with a jump of 1.60m, a height that Chetty failed on her three attempts.

The other female athlete representing Seychelles, Meryle Rabat, found it hard to keep up with her competitors in the 3000m race as she finished in 9th place with a time of 12 minutes, 31.94 seconds (12:31.94). First place went to Emily Chebet of Kenya, with a record time of 9:10.57.

For the boys, in the 100m sprint semifinal, Sharry Dodin finished fourth in 11.19 seconds, while he could only finish fifth in the 200m sprint semifinal in 22.94 seconds.

Amadave Joubert on his part could only managed to finish 7th in the 3000m event, with a time of 10:59.57.

In Javelin, Iven Rachel managed a best throw of 47.86m which was only enough for a 6th place finish. The gold medal was won by Henru Van Vuuren of South Africa, who managed a distance of 72.68m.

In the Octathlon event, which featured eight track & field events, Michel Evenor abandoned the contest before he could finish his eighth event, which was the 1000m race. He did complete the seven other events though and that including the best performance among the other three competitors in the Shot Put event. There, Evenor managed a distance of 12.74m.

The Octathlon was won by Mauritius’ Bryan Tonta with a total of 5363 points.
