Ninth Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion – August 1-9, 2015 |27 May 2015

Federations receive update ahead of IOIG

The meeting in progress

Representatives of the various sports federations and associations that will be competing at the ninth Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in Reunion from August 1-9, were given an update of the developments ahead of their final preparations for the games.

National Sports Council (NSC) chief executive Giovanna Rousseau, Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) president Antonio Gopal and vice-president Hugh Adam recently returned to Seychelles after attending the Comité international des Jeux (CIJ) meeting, where they were given the final insights regarding the games.

On Monday evening, they along with Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Minister Vincent Meriton, community development and sports principal secretary Denis Rose and the chairman of the NSC board, Jean Larue, met the different federations and association at the Maison Football to give them the final details and schedule for the games.

Other issues discussed include the technical rules, departure date and other logistics. Those in attendance also had the chance to voice out their concerns for clarification.

Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Seychelles and hosts Reunion are all expected to be part of the region’s biggest sports manifestation, where the Reunionais will be hoping to capitalise on their home advantage to retain first place on the medals table. At the last IOIG in Seychelles in 2011, Reunion won 58 gold medals, one more than hosts Seychelles.

The target for Seychelles however will be to knock Reunion off their perch as we look to improve on our best position – second place – achieved in 2011.
Fourteen sports will be represented at the 2015 games and they are athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, handball, judo, sailing, swimming, table-tennis, tennis, volleyball and weightlifting.
