Interfaith body reacts to same sex marriage in Seychelles |12 June 2015
Members of the Seychelles Interfaith Council (Sifco) have said they are “saddened” by the decision of the British government, represented by the British high commission, to celebrate in the Seychelles the same sex marriage of two UK citizens according to UK laws on UK soil.
“While this is happening on UK soil, do the people of Seychelles and the government have any say on what will happen on Saturday on their land, as the persons concerned are living in the Seychelles?,” asks Sifco in a communique.
“This is important, given the attention which this ‘wedding of two men’ is bringing to the Seychelles and is creating a state of complete confusion in the minds of our fellow citizens,” says the communique.
“As faith leaders, we foresee in this event the creation of two groups of Seychellois, those abiding and who are respectful of the law of our land and those who are not,” adds the communique.
“We wish to assure those who will be committing themselves for the rest of their lives that we have nothing against them and will continue to uphold them in our prayers. We also pray that God will continually bless our Nation.
To us, marriage is always a response to God’s love for the act of procreation of children,” concludes the communique.
